Every once in a while you stumble on a product you didn't know you needed. Then you use it once and wonder how you got along without it.

For me, that was the VisionAid Magnifier.

Let's be honest about the squinting.

I'm 64. My eyes are fine for everyday life. But fine print on medicine bottles, splinters, a tiny screw in the junk drawer... at some point you're holding things at arm's length under a lamp, squinting like a pirate.

Three things won me over:

1. The light and magnification follow my eyes

Wherever I look, that's where the light and the zoom are. Turn your head — it comes with you. Both hands stay free. Sounds like a small thing until you experience it. Small details suddenly big, bright, and right in front of you.

2. Five lenses, five strengths

A mild one for reading and everyday stuff, stronger ones for real close-up work. Last week I pulled a splinter out of my finger that I couldn't even SEE without it. Popped in the strong lens and there it was — big as a toothpick.

3. Crystal clear, edge to edge

I've tried other magnifiers over the years and most of them distort the image around the edges, which honestly makes the eyestrain worse. These are sharp edge to edge. It looks like real life, only bigger. The lens angle and distance adjust too, so you fine-tune it to your own eyes.

The most borrowed item in the house.

I paint little figurines as a hobby, so that's where the VisionAid lives — in theory. In practice my wife takes it for her cross stitch and "forgets" to bring it back. I've found it on her craft table so many times I'm considering ordering a second one just to keep the peace.

Then my neighbor tried it.

He came over with a splinter his wife couldn't get out with tweezers and a phone flashlight.
